JAMUN
The jambul fruit is regarded as a reputed medicine in traditional Ayurvedic medicine because of its specific action on the pancreas. The fruit, the seeds, and the whole fruit juice are all useful in the treatment of diabetes. Its seeds contain jamboline, which controls the excessive conversion of starch to sugar.
Jamun fruit is botanically known as Syzygium cumini and is produced on an evergreen tree that reaches up to 20 feet tall. In its native India, the fruit is also called Jambul or Jaam.
Nutritional Value Jamun fruit is used as a treatment in Ayurvedic medicine in India for a variety of ailments. The rich, dark color of the berry is the result of anthocyanins in the skin. This phytonutrient provides ample antioxidants as well.
Jamun also contains vitamins A and C, folic acid, potassium, zinc, and iron, among others.
USES: In Ayurvedic medicine, the berries and other parts of the Jamun tree are used to treat anemia, digestive issues, and respiratory infections and are also used to regulate one’s heartbeat.
Photochemical Constitutes: Jambolan is rich in compounds containing Anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaemferol and myrecetin.
The seeds are claimed to contain alkaloid, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin, which halts the diastatic conversion of starch into sugar and seed extract has lowered blood pressure by 34.6% and this action is attributed to the ellagic acid content.
The seeds have been reported to be rich in flavonoids, a well-known antioxidant, which accounts for the scavenging of free radicals and protective effect on antioxidant enzymes and also found to have high total phenolics with significant antioxidant activity and are fairly rich in protein and calcium. Java plums are rich in sugar, mineral salts, and vitamins C, PP which fortifies the beneficial effects of vitamin C, anthocyanins, and flavonoids.
The fruits are rich in raffinose, glucose, fructose, citric acid, mallic acid, gallic acid, anthocyanins; delphinidin-3-gentiobioside, malvidin-3-laminaribioside, petunidin-3-gentiobioside, cyanidin diglycoside, petunidin, and malvidin. The sourness of fruits may be due to the presence of gallic acid.
Medicinal Properties: The bark is acrid, sweet, digestive, astringent to the bowels, anthelmintic and used for the treatment of a sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, thirst, biliousness, dysentery, and ulcers. It is also a good blood purifier. The fruit is acrid, sweet, cooling and astringent to the bowels and removes bad smell from mouth, biliousness, stomachic, astringent, diuretic and antidiabetic.
Uses in Traditional Medicines: It is widely distributed throughout India and Ayurvedic medicine (Indian folk medicine) mentions its use for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. During last four decades, numerous folk medicinal reports on the antidiabetic effects of this plant have been cited in the literature.
KARELA
One such plant is Momordica charantia which is grown in tropical countries worldwide and it has been used as a traditional herbal medicine for thousands of years although its origin is unknown. This review examines the medicinal chemistry and use(s) of M. charantia and its various extracts and compounds, their biochemical properties and how they act as anti-diabetic (hypoglycemic) drugs and the various mechanisms by which they exert their beneficial effects in controlling and treating DM.
Diabetes management:
- It has proven efficacy in controlling glucose levels in the blood.
- Also, it helps in regenerating beta cells responsible for insulin and proinsulin secretions.
- This is also a rich source of natural flavonoids and antioxidants.
- It protects the liver and thus protects the body from diabetic ulcers.
- The fruit and seeds of this plant contain most active blood sugar-lowering components.
- This contains an active principle called charantin.
- The bitter melon itself grows off the vine as a green, oblong-shaped fruit with a distinct warty exterior – through its size, texture and bitterness vary between the different regions in which it grows – and is rich in vital vitaminsand minerals.
Bottom of Form
How does it affect diabetes?
In addition to being a food ingredient, bitter melon has also long been used as an herbal remedy for a range of ailments, including type 2 diabetes. The fruit contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including charantin, which has been confirmed to have a blood glucose-lowering effect, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels. It is also known that bitter melon contains a lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations by acting on peripheral tissues and suppressing appetite – similar to the effects of insulin in the brain. This lectin is thought to be a major factor behind the hypoglycaemic effect that develops after eating bitter melon.
Bitter melon extract: Bitter melon increased cellular uptake of glucose and improved glucose tolerance.
According to studies, bitter gourd has a few active substances with anti-diabetic properties. Bitter gourd contains an insulin-like compound called Polypeptide-p or p-insulin which has been shown to control diabetes naturally. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels.
The plant has many different chemical components, which help medicinally either alone or when combined.
One of the hypoglycemic components is a steroid saponin called momocharin (charantin) (1) with insulin-like chemical effect. Charantin has a molecular weight of 9.7 kDa and it is the belief that charantin is the active hypoglycaemic agent of M. charantia.
One-half of one cup of a standard leaves or whole herb concoction, 1-2 times daily is adequate for a hypoglycaemic effect. Alternatively, an amount of one to two grams of the water extracted powder from either the leaf or fruit is adequate as a daily dose. Many people liquidize two to three green fruits with water or with a tropical juice and drink 10 to 20 ml twice per day prior to the meal. The question which people often ask is: can they take M. charantia with traditional commercial anti-diabetic drugs? The answer is to discuss the matter with their General Practitioner first.
There may be an element of drug interaction between M. charantia and commercially available anti-diabetic glucose-lowering drugs but further experiments are required to determine the kind of interaction which may occur between a commercially available hypoglycemic drug and M. charantia or its hypoglycaemic extract. For people with T2DM there is no harm in using M. charantia alone,
It is particularly noteworthy that M. charantia is an alternative herbal therapy that has been used primarily to reduce blood glucose level for thousands of years in patients with DM. Regarding adverse effects.
